CORE Statement on Truth in National Parks Act Introduction
WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Coalition for Outdoor Renaming and Education commends Representative Sharice Davids and Representative Dan Goldman for their leadership in introducing the Truth in National Parks Act, an effort to stop the removal and alteration of accurate historical and cultural interpretation across National Park Service sites.
Our national parks and public lands are not just scenic landscapes. They are places where people encounter the full, complex history of this country. When accurate stories are removed, narrowed, or rewritten, it erases communities, weakens public trust, and makes these shared places less welcoming for all people.
The Truth in National Parks Act would require National Park Service interpretive and educational materials to be historically and culturally accurate, prohibit the removal or alteration of accurate materials unless necessary to incorporate new credible information, restore accurate materials removed or altered since January 20, 2025, require consultation with Tribal Nations and relevant stakeholders before changes are made, and direct a report on co-stewardship agreements between Tribal Nations and federal agencies.
CORE stands in strong support of this legislation and envisions a future where public lands tell the truth, honor Tribal Nations and historically excluded communities, and reflect the depth and diversity of the places we collectively cherish.
